A SUSPECTED arson attack caused “untold damage” to a large area of heathland and forest just outside Bere Regis yesterday.
Around 50 firefighters battled to contain the blaze, which started near Turners Puddle at around 10.20am.
Flames spread quickly because of brisk winds and mobile homes were threatened.
An area of heath and woodland approximately the size of seven football pitches was scorched.
Incident commander Dave Myers said: “Although no-one was injured, arson is an extremely dangerous and irresponsible practice. The fire has caused untold damage to this once beautiful area which will take years to regenerate.”
It took around four hours for firefighters to tame the blaze.
