BEACHGOERS watched in horror as a teenage boy scaled Durdle Door rock and leapt into the sea on Wednesday (June 30).

Portland Coastguard’s rescue helicopter was srambled but while it was on its way, the teenager, thought to be about 18, jumped into the water and swam away.

Portland Coastguard Watch Manager Bruce Lack said: “This young man is incredibly lucky to have survived this leap.

“We believe that he is safe and well on shore although we have been unable to speak to him.”

He added: “Last year five young men lost their lives to leaping from cliffs and other structures, sometimes known as tombstoning. Thirteen young people also sustained serious injuries such as dislocations, head and back injuries and broken bones.”
