ASSISTANT boss Richard O'Kelly wants Cherries new boy Daryl Taylor to take a leaf out of the book of the World Cup wingers.

Taylor joined Cherries for the start of pre-season training this week after being handed a short-term contract by boss Sean O'Driscoll.

His arrival ended a long chase for O'Kelly who had tried to persuade Taylor to join West Brom when he was on the coaching staff at the Hawthorns.

And having finally landed his target initially on a monthly contract O'Kelly is keen to see the 21-year-old former Walsall wide man impress.

O'Kelly told the Daily Echo: "The World Cup has shown that players who are direct and can put opponents on the back foot are very important to a team.

"That's the type of player Daryl is and Wade Elliott was very similar for us. There is an opportunity here to show what he can do."

A firm favourite with former Walsall boss Paul Merson, Taylor made 22 appearances and scored on his full debut against Cherries at Dean Court in August 2004.

But despite playing three times during the Saddlers' run-in last season, he was told he would not be kept on by new boss Richard Money following their relegation.

Taylor chose Cherries ahead of a number of Conference and League Two clubs and also turned down an opportunity in New Zealand.

O'Kelly added: "He's got pace and the ability to carry the ball and to put defenders on the back foot. He possesses the attributes to keep defences stretched which allow you to play a passing game.

"He certainly had it all as a youngster when I first saw him and people who watched him play for Walsall last year said he showed these attributes.

"He's also got good ball skills and is versatile. He plays mainly on the right-hand side but can also play through the middle.

"The challenge now is to prove his match fitness. The past year hasn't gone how he would have wanted it to because of a few little niggles he picked up after he had a cartilage operation.

"But everything is clear now and he's fully recovered. He finished off last season strongly and our physio Steve Hard has seen his medical records and everything is in order."

Taylor's move could be extended or made permanent should he impress during Cherries' warm-up campaign.
