UK hotels are reporting a decline in bookings this summer.

That’s according to Bishop Fleming, the accountants, which has found that 41 per cent of hotels have reported at least a five per cent drop in bookings. For 13.5 per cent those declines are more than 15 per cent.

However, a further 41 per cent reported no change in bookings compared with last year.

The survey also found that 55 per cent of holidaymakers are holding back from making bookings due to uncertain job prospects and the economic climate.

Bishop Fleming’s James Finnegan said: “This is a clear indication that, while travel industry pundits predicted a boom in ‘staycation’ holidays, the truth is that consumers are being very cautious – leaving their decisions and bookings to the last moment. They want to be sure of the weather, and of their own financial position.”
