THOUSANDS of people packed the platform at Swanage Railway station to get a glimpse of the Tornado.
This engine, the first new mainline steam locomotive to be built in Britain for nearly 50 years, made its historic visit yesterday.
Swanage Railway manager Martin Payne said: “It was a fantastic day – people flocked to the station in their thousands.
“It was great to have it here, and the day passed of without any major problems.”
The engine, a London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Peppercorn A1 class No 60163, hauled a train from Waterloo as part of a special excursion.
It is hoped the Tornado will make a return visit in September.
The £3m engine, built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, took 18 years of fundraising and construction.
It is based at Hither Green in London.
