FLYTIPPERS dumping rubbish at Castlepoint’s recycling centre are being warned they are being caught on camera and are running the risk of being prosecuted.

The Bournemouth shopping park is being plagued by persistent flytipping, with rubbish being left there virtually every day.

Fridges, armchairs and large oildrums are among the items that have been left at the recycling banks near the lower-level car park entrance at the B&Q end of the shopping complex.

In a bid to combat the problem, Castlepoint bosses have erected improved signs clearly stating what can be left at the recycling centre and what the penalties are for flytipping there.

And they are using the centre’s number plate recognition system and CCTV to monitor use of the site.

Bill Riddle, Castlepoint operations manager, said: “We are very proud of our centre and the work we do in recycling waste materials from the stores.

“The council-operated recycling centre is a useful facility for the public which is now being increasingly abused.

“We have agreed with Bournemouth council and Dorset Police that we will pass to the police the vehicle details of each offending flytipper with a view to prosecution,” he added.

And Larry Austin, the council’s street services manager, said the problem was a financial burden on taxpayers because the council was having to visit Castlepoint twice a week to remove dumped items.

He said he hoped the new notices would ensure that people had “no illusions” about what was an acceptable use of the site.
