A FERNDOWN man is going for a world first by fronting a computer-led sing-a-long at a summer fair tomorrow.

Cerebral palsy sufferer Ken Dykes, 37, wants the karaoke session with his Stephen Hawking-style computer at Holton Lee Summer Fair to raise money to re-print his book Don’t Give Up.

Written with wife Jen, 38, who also has cerebral palsy, it covers their struggles and is designed to inspire others with physical disabilities.

Ken, who taps a button with his head to make the computer speak, said: “I’ve got one of the best computers in the country and probably even the world.

“It’s great to be able to share my thoughts and feelings at last.

“We want to help people to become more aware of everything. We’ve got a good quality of life and want to help other people do the same.”

The married couple of nine years met at Poole Hospital, when Ken was two years old. He needs 24-hour support and they have lived together for six years.

Jen said: “Now we are together, it’s brilliant. The only problem is I have to put up with the football, and learn to keep my mouth shut now Ken’s got his computer.

“All my life I have needed to speak for him.”

Ken writes programme notes for Bournemouth FC and will lead Thought for the Day on Hope FM on June 15.

The first 400 copies of Don’t Give Up sold out and the goal is to raise £1,200 to re-print 1,000.

Holton Lee Summer Fair runs from 11am-5pm in Holton Heath, Poole.
