Rio Ferdinand's World Cup dream is over it has been confirmed.
The 31-year-old suffered a knee injury in training on Friday lunchtime and has been ruled out of the tournament, just one day after arriving in South Africa.
It is a bitter blow for coach Fabio Capello, who installed Ferdinand as John Terry's replacement as captain in February.
Tottenham centre-back Michael Dawson will fly out later on Friday as Ferdinand's replacement, while Steven Gerrard will take over as captain.
