A MAN has died after being struck by a train at a Poole railway station.

Witnesses saw the man, aged in his late 30s to early 40s, step in front of the Southampton-bound train at Parkstone station on Thursday morning.

Despite on-the-spot treatment by paramedics, who tended to the man while he was trapped under the train, his injuries were so severe he died a short time later at Poole Hospital.

It is not thought he ever regained consciousness. British Transport Police Inspector Mick Morriss told the Daily Echo: “What we know is a man was stood on the platform.

He was then seen to walk off the edge of the platform into the path of the moving train. “Three witnesses saw this happen, but we don’t know the identity of the man at this stage.

“We are now working to establish this. “One of the three witnesses was the train driver. “Obviously this has been quite a shock for all of them.”

The train, the 9.13 Poole to Southampton Central service, remained in the station for some time as investigators carried out their work. South West Trains bosses did mobilise buses as a replacement service but they were not needed as the line re-opened at 10.34am.

More than a dozen police vehicles attended the scene, along with Network Rail response units. Traffic along Station Road built up substantially in both directions as the incident unfolded.

The coroner has been informed and police will now work to establish the identity of the man so the news can be broken to any next of kin.
