SCHOOLS across Dorset and Hampshire are crying out for volunteers to be school governors.

There are 50 vacancies in Poole alone and at least six primary schools in the Christchurch area do not have a full governing body.

National charity School Governors’ One Stop Shop (SGOSS) is behind a recruitment campaign to get more people involved.

And they have urged members of the public to volunteer for the rewarding posts.

“You do not need to be a parent to volunteer and free training is available to build personal skills, boost self confidence and get you ready for this very rewarding and exciting role” said a spokesman for the charity.

“You don’t need to have any special qualifications – just a desire to help.”

Governing bodies work with the head of the school to make managerial decisions on a range of topics including curriculum, budget and staffing.

Their role could become even more important if more schools take up the government’s offer to become Academies, therefore having control of their own budgets.

Anyone aged over 18 can apply. They must be prepared to go to an average of two to four evening meetings each term. Those interested should contact Laura Garland at SGOSS on 0207 354 9805 or email laura.garland@sgoss.org.uk
