FASHION chain Primark has submitted plans for its proposed new Bournemouth store.

Primark is seeking permission to redevelop the British Home Stores (Bhs) shop unit in Commercial Road.

In January this year, Bhs boss Sir Philip Green announced he was handing over 10 Bhs stores to his cut-price rival Primark as part of a retail shake-up.

Staff and customers were shocked to learn that Bournemouth was one of the stores that was to change hands.

A closing down sale is already well under way at the Bhs in Commercial Road, and much of the shop space now stands empty. It is due to close for good later this month.

Primark stores in Boscombe and Poole have proved massively popular and it is anticipated the Bournemouth store could be open and trading for Christmas.

Primark’s planning application states the building will be completely stripped out internally and fitted out to provide new retail floors at ground and first floor levels.

The frontage will be extended at first floor level, providing additional retail space, and a new double height glazed entrance will be installed.

The application states: “In summary it is felt that the proposed alternations will greatly improve the overall appearance of the store and will provide a more dynamic visual focus for this part of Commercial Road.”

The firm is also applying to erect new signage at the shop entrance. The plans will be considered in due course.
