This appealing pooch is one of a growing number of stray dogs being picked up on Poole’s streets.

And the council is appealing for the dog’s owner to come forward and claim him.

The wire-haired, tri-coloured, male Jack Russell terrier, aged between two and four years old, was found on Monday, May 24.

He was wearing a brown studded leather harness and was picked up following an accident at 8am in Lower Blandford Road.

The dog was taken to the Walton Lodge Veterinary Centre where he was treated for a fracture of his right front leg.

Animal welfare officers from environmental and consumer protection have been trying to trace the owners, without success.

“We have seen a significant increase in the number of stray dogs over the last 12 months,” said Cllr Don Collier, Poole council cabinet portfolio holder for the economy.

“This may be due to the current economic climate with some owners feeling they cannot afford to keep their dog.

“We strive to work with dog owners in ensuring they act responsibly and offer a microchipping service which provides a permanent and simple way of protecting pets.”

He added: “We hope the owner of this dog will come forward.”

The council provides a 24-hour, seven-day service to deal with stray dogs and last year received an RSPCA Silver Footprint Award for its work.
