PROOF-reading the biography of a football star is all in a day’s work for one West Moors teenager who’s backing England to win the World Cup next month.
Jonny Tomlinson, 13, of West Moors Middle School, has helped edit a new book about Steven Gerrard.
He got involved after reading another book and seeing that a group of children were listed as contributors.
Jonny said: “I emailed the publishers and asked if I could help.
“They emailed back a few days later to say yes, and sent me a big manuscript like the script for a play.”
The Portsmouth supporter was asked to suggest new words and comment on how clear the seven-chapter story was.
Jonny said: “Editing the book was fun and interesting because I was one of the first to see the story. I kept reading through it and there were a lot of American names, so I said to take them out.
“It’s aimed at kids around my age, so I changed a couple of the words because I thought they might have been too hard for some people to understand.”
Thanks to Jonny, the book now includes pictures of the Hillsb-orough Disaster to help younger readers appreciate the accident.
Jonny also completed a comment sheet explaining why he enjoyed the book, whether he would recommend it to friends and marking it out of 10.
“I’m into football anyway,” Jonny said. “Gerrard’s a good player, even if I don’t like his team! I’d definitely do it again.”
Jonny will see his name in print in February 2011 when the book, entitled Steven Gerrard, is published by Barrington Stoke.
