SHADOW transport secretary Theresa Villiers steamed into Wareham to discuss the town’s controversial level crossing.

Mrs Villiers visited Nick King, Conservative candidate for Mid-Dorset and North Poole, to look at options for what is branded one of the country’s most dangerous crossings.

Pedestrians often run the red lights at the crossing, which is now protected by temporary electronic gates.

Other potential solutions to the problem include a footway alongside the A351 Wareham bypass and a new footbridge.

However, residents are keen not to lose the crossing, which is vital to Wareham as it connects the north and south of the town.

Mrs Villiers earlier paid a trip to Swanage to meet representatives from the railway and the South Dorset Tory hopeful Richard Drax.

They discussed the attempt to reconnect Swanage to the mainline network, the decision deadline for which has been pushed back to July.
