More than 80 Poole shops have been entered in the fifth annual competition to find the best in the borough.

The pressure is being cranked up for the prestigious Top of the Shops Awards as mystery shoppers pay their visits and take soundings.

Mandy Payne, the Dorset Retail Skillshop co-ordinator, has been leading a team visiting retailers over the past few weeks, who hope to walk away with an award on May 13.

Categories include best customer service, best overall retailer, best window display, best newcomer and the green award, and nominations have come in from across the borough.

The Top of the Shops awards ceremony, hosted by Daily Echo editor Neal Butterworth and Wave 105 breakfast presenter Steve Power, takes place at the Quay Thistle Hotel.

“Top of the Shops is a key event in Poole’s retail calendar and it’s a great opportunity for those who put their customers first to be rewarded for their efforts,” said Gwen Brennan-Barrass, economic development officer, Borough of Poole.

“Retail is an important sector in Poole’s economy and we are happy to support those who are committed to good service and quality,” she said.

More than 100 people attend the evening, which is sponsored by Breeze Volkswagen and Sibbett Gregory.

It has become a highlight in the retail calendar, with many taking the opportunity to dress up for an enjoyable evening – with the bonus of perhaps walking away with a coveted trophy.

Last year Top Shop took the honours.

Who will it be this year?
