BRONZE gates that have guarded a Bournemouth mausoleum for the past 100 years have been stolen.
The gates formed the entrance to the Russell-Cotes Mausoleum in the Wimborne Road cemetery but were stolen last weekend.
Each gate carries an ornate 16 petal chrysanthemum design, which is the family emblem of the Emperor Meiji of Japan. This was inspired by Sir Merton and Lady Russell-Cotes’ visit to Japan in 1885.
Cllr David Smith, cabinet member for communities, said: “This is an extremely sad loss both historically and culturally for Bournemouth.”
