THE Dorset neighbours of controversial broadcaster Jonathan Ross, who sensationally announced his departure from the BBC yesterday, had nothing but praise for the star.

Ross, who says he will not renegotiate his contract when it ends in July, has been with the Corporation for 13 years.

The East London boy grew up to become one of the biggest draws at the BBC, with his Friday night chat show, film review programme and Radio 2 show.

But his reported three-year £18 million salary – and fall-out following the notorious radio prank with comedian Russell Brand, involving an on-air telephone call to Andrew Sachs – fuelled speculation about his long-term future at the Beeb.

He said: “Although I have had a wonderful time working for the BBC, and am very proud of the shows I have made while there, over the last two weeks I have decided not to re-negotiate when my current contract comes to an end.”

In Swanage, where the star has a holiday home, locals were full of compliments.

Resident Tony Reynolds, aged 67, said: “I’m sad to see him leave the BBC to be honest. I know there have been a lot of rumours about his future, but he has always supported the town.

“He happily helped us launch the Swanage Regatta and most people have nothing but good things to say about him.

“We often see him and his family walking his dogs in the area – I wish him all the luck in the future and am sure it won’t be long until he’s back on our screens again.”

Ross, who has a 16th-century stone-built grade II listed Swanage home, has taken an active role in the town, including supporting the summer carnival and fireworks.

Accounts worker Andy Fidler, 51, said: “It is definitely good for the town having him here.

“I think the media have jumped on his back a bit. I think he is a really nice guy, really affable.”

Retail assistant Shelly Smith, who has served the Ross family in her Swanage shop, said: “He was really nice when I met him. He came in with his children.

“Everyone likes him in Swanage. He’s just a nice, friendly, very funny man.

“I am sure he will be back making people laugh soon.”
