A DISABLED man has spoken of the moment his beloved blind poodle cross was savaged by two vicious rottweilers.

The attack, which a veterinary surgeon said nearly killed the 10-year-old pooch, Jake, was the latest in a string of disturbing incidents involving the rottweiler pair, says shocked owner Steve Gresham.

Days after the mauling, the rottweilers’ owner – who has been unavailable for comment – agreed to have one of the dogs re-housed.

Steve started a petition, signed by 40 concerned residents, calling for the removal of both rottweilers from his Poole tower block.

“The feeling in both blocks is running quite high,” he said.

“There has been a girl on the fourth floor pinned against the wall and also another young girl attacked by them.

“There have been lots of complaints about these dogs – they have caused terror around the estate.”

However, landlord Poole Housing Partnership (PHP) – which insists it is working with the rottweilers’ owner to rectify any problems – says Sunday’s 6.30pm mauling was the first recorded attack it has been made aware of.

PHP says the more aggressive rottweiler was sent to a rescue centre, from where it will hopefully be re-housed.

The landlord will continue to monitor the remaining dog.

Recalling the attack, Mr Gresham, aged 46, who is registered disabled, said: “I was just walking along the alleyway near Poole Stadium and all of a sudden the rottweilers appeared and all hell broke loose.

“Their owner shouted, ‘Don’t worry about it, they’ll be OK’, but one of them just mauled my dog.

“I was so shocked, I was trying to get the rottweiler off.

“I was kicking it but nothing seemed to phase it.

“The dogs have caused problems for a long time.

“People are scared of them.

“Jake has had to have drains put in his neck. The vet told me if he didn’t have such a strong heart he would have had to be put down.”

A PHP spokesman said: “We work with the council on animal welfare and safety and are working closely on this case with the dog warden.”
