WORK has begun on a new “extra care” facility in Blandford.

Foundations have been dug and walls built at a development of 40 self-contained apartments on Park Road, designed for old folk who need support, but don’t want to live in care homes.

Cllr Graham Carr-Jones, the district council’s affordable housing chief, said an ageing population would make extra care facilities more popular.

“We’re very excited about this scheme which offers a fantastic alternative to residential care for people who can’t manage in ordinary sheltered housing or in their own homes,” he said.

“It will also be part of the local community making sure that residents aren’t isolated or cut off from ordinary activities and life around them.”

The one and two-bedroom apartments have been designed to be adapted as tenants get older.

Each apartment includes a fitted kitchen, specially adapted bathroom, central heating, double-glazing, and a smoke alarm.

Community facilities will include a lounge, dining room, and space for hobbies and crafts, including IT and hairdressing.

State-of-the-art security and warden alarm systems will be fitted to ensure the safety and independence of tenants, who will have access to planned care and round-the-clock support.

The scheme is being built as a partnership between Synergy Housing Group, Dorset County Council, and North Dorset District Council, and is the first extra care facility in North Dorset. The apartments are on track to be completed by autumn 2010. Priority will be given to older people who need the help of carers to remain independent.

Applicants must be on the North Dorset District Council housing register. For more information, call 01258 454111.
