JAY Herne will go into Buccaneers’ cup final home leg against Buxton next Thursday only four rides away from gaining Wimborne Road speedway immortality.

The Aussie ace produced two spectacular third-to-first bursts against the USA Dream Team to stretch his remarkable run of unbeaten races by an opposition rider to 32 going back to July 2.

Only two Poole riders have won more successive races, or finished second behind their team-mate, in all competitions on the same track since the Dorset promotion was formed in 1948.

Tony Lewis reeled off 35 at the end of 1961 and beginning of 1962, and Martin Yeates got 34 in 1985, both at Division Two level.

So if Herne can go through the card against the Hitmen he will become the official ‘All-Time King of Wimborne Road’.

Bournemouth Castle Cover’s captain has been a revelation for them in their first year in the third-tier.

It’s largely because of his big-hitting performances that Buccaneers are overwhelming favourites to complete a league and cup double.

Tonight, Herne warmed the hearts of almost everyone by putting the Americans to the sword. To be honest, he couldn’t have picked opposition better suited to increasing his pre-meeting tally of 28 unbeaten races, which had him tied with Malcolm Simmons (1977) and Brian Crutcher (1952).

The Dream Team were making their first British tour appearance on a 299.1 metre circuit that must have seemed alien to their riders, who are more used to riding on bowls of about 180 to 220, so, predictably, it took most of them time to get going.

Surprisingly, Herne had to blitz inside early leader Tyson Burmiester and team-mate Danny Warwick on the fourth bend to win heat one.

Jimmy Fishback pushed Herne hard for two laps in race six before the Aussie swept majestically outside Warwick and Kenny Ingalls on the second turn to triumph in heat 10 as well to bring him level on 31 unbeaten races with Bjarne Pedersen (2006-2007) and Stan Bear (1985).

Herne completed his immaculate 12-point maximum in race 13 to jump up to third in the all-time standings.

Warwick suffered head, leg, arm and hand injuries in a spectacular heat 10 fall, while Andrew Aldridge insisted he was only battered and bruise after falling just as violently in the next race.

Bournemouth are without unavailable Jerran Hart in the National League title play-off, semi-final, second leg, at Weymouth tomorrow night (7.15pm).

If Buccaneers protect their 33-point first leg advantage, they’ll host Plymouth in their leg of the final on October 28.

Weymouth: 1 (guest) T Poole, 2 Day, 3 Smethills, 4 Cockle, 5 Compton, 6 White-Williams, 7 Webster.

Buccaneers: 1 Herne, 2 Warwick, 3 M Baseby, 4 R/r for Hart, 5 Newman, 6 A Baseby, 7 Aldridge.
