THE MET office has today issued a severe weather warning for Southern England.
Forecasters have predicted outbreaks of heavy rain from 1pm until 11pm this evening (Wednesday).
They have estimated rainfall exceeding 15mm in three hours with some places seeing 25 to 40mm during the same period.
Motorists are being urged to take extra care with some disruption on major roads and motorways expected.
A Highways Agency spokesman said the best way to stay safe on the roads during the severe weather was to plan journeys and allow extra time.
The spokesman said: "Rain and spray can reduce visibility and more than double the distance it takes to stop.
"Drivers are advised to use headlights and keep well back from the vehicle in front. If water is reducing grip and making steering unresponsive, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually."
