WHAT now for the derelict Greenridge site in Upton?

The heart of the town has become an eyesore since the pub was closed by Hall and Woodhouse 18 months ago.

The Blandford brewery saw its planning application to build a care home on the plot thrown out by Purbeck planners in the summer.

But with the site still surrounded by wire fences and overgrown with weeds, Upton residents are desperate for something to be made of the central spot.

Simon Thomson, chairman of the Lytchett Minster and Upton Community Association, said there were “no regrets” over the failure of the care home scheme.

But he added the community was keen to help Hall and Woodhouse come up with a solution for the site sooner rather than later.

He said: “The site is a bit of a mess and it’s frustrating.

“We want to work with them to give our town a centre and try to make them some money.”

Ideas from residents have ranged from a new family-friendly pub or cafe to a health centre.

It has been suggested the Greenridge plot is big enough to house a new town square, as well as any other new development.

After the care home proposals were rejected, Hall and Woodhouse said it would consider an appeal against Purbeck council’s decision. The brewery has yet to lodge an appeal, leaving the future of the Greenridge site in limbo.

Hall and Woodhouse was unavailable for comment.
