SPINNING star Max Waller is relishing the prospect of bowling at cricket legend Adam Gilchrist as he prepares to display his talents in the Champions League Twenty20.

Waller, from Highcliffe, will board the plane to India with his Somerset team-mates tomorrow to take part in one of the world’s biggest cricket competitions.

The tournament sees the top Twenty20 teams from England, India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies lock horns, with Waller’s Somerset in a group alongside the Deccan Chargers and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Chargers are captained by former Aussie star Gilchrist, but despite the wicket-keeper’s attacking nature, 21-year-old Waller cannot wait to test himself against one of the game’s greats.

He told the Echo: “I think it’s going to be a good experience.

“I bowl at Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer all the time, so that’s no different.

“Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds (who also plays for Deccan) are destructive players, but I’m really looking forward to it.

“There’s lots of money to play for as well.”

Salisbury-born Waller, who learned his trade with Bashley in the Southern League, has enjoyed a rapid rise this summer.

He added: “I’ve played 21 games this season and wasn’t expecting to play nearly that many.

“But once you play one game, you want to play every game.”

Waller, who has taken time out from his business studies course at Bournemouth University to concentrate on cricket, stands to be well rewarded should his team be successful, with the total prize money a massive $6million.
