ST Peter’s Choir has a lot to celebrate thanks to a recruitment drive which began with an article in the Echo last November. Since then, the choir has quadrupled, growing from three to 12 boys.

Two of the candidates who came forward have now been made into head choristers, a tremendous accolade.

The Rev Ian Terry appointed Adam and Olly as head choristers during Sung Eucharist last Sunday.

“Adam and Olly have showed extraordinary leadership and talent, particularly on tour to St David’s Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, in August,” David Coram, director of music, told me.

“After a year’s recruiting work, the ‘roll call’ stands at 12,” he added. “And it is my great ambition for 2010 to restore the choir to the line-up of 25 to 30 boys it enjoyed 100 years ago.” David feels St Peter’s choir is an important part of the town’s cultural heritage.

The boys meet every Wednesday between 5pm and 7.15pm and always start with a shared meal.

Parents of any boys who are interested in joining St Peter’s Choir can contact David Coram on 07875 578876.

A separate girls’ choir at St Peter’s is also recruiting new members. Parents of interested girls can contact Alice on 07875 578850.
