NOW I understand why the We Are Your Friends creators are always desperate to secure Example for their big gigs – the man can entertain a crowd!

If, like me, you’d looked up Example’s previous musical offerings pre-gig for a taste of what to expect at his live show, you’d realise, like me, that it was a waste of time.

The 27-year-old London-based rapper found cult fame a few years back for his light-hearted and amusing take on pop songs, releasing tracks like Vile, a spoof of Lily Allen’s song Smile.

Example live, though, is a totally different animal. It’s in-your-face grime, drum ’n’ bass and even electro beats with insightful lyrics and a whole lot of energy – the perfect headliner for an electro-rave night.

It’s like two totally separate artists linked only by name.

It seemed no-one could have enjoyed the Old Firestation stage more than the ever-smiling Example as an adoring neon covered crowd bounced, jumped, sang and danced at his every command. His sheer enthusiasm ensured the set never lulled or dropped in intensity at any point.

The Fulham-born rapper’s final acts were to play new single Watch The Sun Come Up – surprisingly poppy and seemingly designed for the chart recognition he craves – before getting back to his roots (where he seemed most comfortable) with his biggest grime hit, Hooligans.

He came, he saw, he killed the crowd!
