TWO men who completed a gruelling Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle marathon in just their pants are looking forward to a good night’s sleep and a well-deserved shower.

Astonishingly, 19-year-old Adam Dunn, from Upton, and Gavin Topley, from Wareham, embarked on the 1,000-mile Action Aid charity ride WITHOUT any money or provisions.

Rather than take cash, food, or other clothes, they put their faith in the generosity of the British public – who came up trumps.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after their 16-day adventure, Gavin said: “It was simply fantastic.

“We had some great experiences and met some brilliant people.

“We stayed with the Canon of Blackburn Cathedral, who tracked us down through Facebook. He was the guy who conducted the Queen Mother’s funeral.

“We stayed with a retired Army colonel, a local farmer, and were put up at hotels and bed and breakfasts along the route.

“We only spent one night sleeping rough, in Glencoe. We’d arrived late and in no clothes so we had to sleep in the woods.”

On that occasion, the lads did have an old coat which they draped over themselves as protection from Scotland’s infamous midges.

Gavin, aged 28, said: “We kept the coat over our heads but the rest of us got absolutely covered in midge bites. This was the only low point.”

The pair, who relied completely on the kindness of residents for shelter and provisions, hope to raise £3,000 for ActionAid, the global charity dedicated to fighting world poverty.

The only items they carried were water, ID, phones, a camera and a map.

They were due back home yesterday evening, after a rail company donated their fares from Glasgow.

Gavin said: “We are shattered and quite dirty – ready for a long shower and looking forward to a good night’s sleep. But it has been an incredible experience.”
