POOLE MP Robert Syms, one of the latest politicians named and shamed in the Telegraph’s incendiary Expenses Files, has denied any wrongdoing.

The Conservative MP was highlighted after claiming more than £2,000 of furniture for his designated second home in London’s West Kensington, then having it delivered to his parents’ address in Wiltshire.

He told the Daily Echo: “It was purely a matter of convenience from my point of view,” but added, “clearly it doesn’t look very good.”

Mr Syms sent a bed, mattress, bedroom furniture, sofa and chair to his parents’ home then submitted an expenses claim to the fees office, in January 2007, that included a £1,379.75 receipt from Beds Direct in Chippenham, and a £677 receipt from DFS in Swindon.

But he says the furniture was only delivered and assembled at his parents’ home, then later transported to his London address.

“This is all legitimate,” he said. “I live in Poole, I talk to people in Poole, and if anyone wants to raise this with me they can.”

Mr Syms, who says his main residence is in Lower Parkstone, Poole, as it was in January 2007, explained: “Because I didn’t want to spend two or three days waiting in London for the delivery, and because IKEA stuff is flat-packed and I’m no good with a screwdriver, I thought I would get them delivered to Wiltshire because I have a family building company and employ carpenters.”

Mr Syms, a paid director of family building firm C Syms and Sons Ltd, continued: “So they assembled the flat-pack stuff and it stayed at my parents’ house for a few weeks. Then it was put in a van, driven to London and put in my flat.”

The under-fire MP expects no more personal expenses revelations and has already spoken to senior party members about the furniture.

And he insists the Telegraph got it wrong when they printed his parents’ home is just five miles from his designated main residence.

“The last time I looked, Chippenham was a lot more than five miles from Poole.”

He also denies driving the van to London himself, explaining this was done by a family friend.
