SPEEDING drivers who roar around a town centre road in Christchurch are giving residents cause for concern.

Claire Gray, who lives in Church Lane, a narrow one-way street with no pavement, says neighbours are concerned about the speed of vehicles as they come around the corner and past the back of The Priory school.

According to the mum-of-one, who is the chairman of the Priory Quarter Residents’ Association, the council ran a speed test last year, which the residents believe inaccurately reflects the real situation.

Claire said: “In all fairness, we live here and have to deal every day with the vehicles that are tearing around the lane.

“A lot of children and elderly people live here and it is a worry.

“The doors of many houses step straight out into the road and because there is not a pavement, a few residents have had some abuse from drivers, telling them to get out of the road.

“Although the survey came back with these results, it is worrying to think that as far as the council are concerned, that is that.

“It is only a matter of time until something serious happens and no-one wants that.

Bob Baker, transportation and highways manager at Christchurch council, said: “We’ve done speed tests in this area and found that 85 per cent of cars were being driven at less than 20mph in Church Lane and only one per cent at more than 30mph.

“This shows that any additional signage or physical intervention is not required.”
