BOSCOMBE’S new loyalty discount card proved almost too good to give away.

“People can’t believe you are not trying to sell them something,” said organiser Steve Kent.

The cards were given away from an information stand in the shopping precinct from 10am to 3.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Kent said: “People thought there must be a catch, but we are trying to give them something for free.”

Shoppers collect a stamp each time they buy something and after 10 purchases they can enter a weekly draw with a prize donated by a participating business.

The card also gives customers access to offers and discounts that the 60-70 participating businesses choose to introduce.

Mr Kent, chairman of the Boscombe Traders Association, said: “We will find out over the next few days how it works out but we think it will increase footfall.”

Membership in the scheme is free to members of Boscombe Traders Association and their only extra cost is contributing a prize worth £25 once a year.

Soft furnishings shop Claire de Lune in Palmerston Road is offering 20 per cent off roll fabrics and stock lampshades.

Partner Barry Barnes said: “In a recession you have got to try anything. It’s a good idea and I’ve seen them work in other places.”

Book Extra in the precinct is offering 10 per cent off to customers who spend £10 or more.

Manager Julie Woodward said: “Boscombe deserves to succeed – it’s got lots of smaller independently owned shops, not chain stores.

“The card is a great idea.”

Ringwood launched a Daily Echo backed loyalty card in March and organiser Jim Stride has told the Echo it appears to be working.
