MINDLESS vandals are giving local children a bad name, says a Somerford community group in despair about the latest piece of damage to a play park.

Almost a month ago members of FROGS (Friends and Residents of the Grange) were forced to defend Somerford’s youngsters after large chunks of play equipment had to be replaced due to vandalism at Waterman’s Park.

It is believed that part of the park was torn apart by a dog after a couple were seen to be goading their pet into biting and pulling off bits of the play equipment, which cost the council hundreds of pounds to replace.

And recently, swings have been damaged in the toddlers’ area at the front of the park.

Jason Perry, member of FROGS said: “We worked so hard with everyone in the community to get this park for the local people and now it is being destroyed.

“It is so frustrating that it appears to be adults that are ultimately responsible for the damage.

“If it continues, the council may not be so inclined to carry on replacing the damaged pieces, as it would seem futile.”

Jason added: “People can be very quick to point the finger at our youngsters, but they are the ones leading by example.”

PC Andrew Morton from Christchurch police said: “The park has been in place now for nearly 18 months and it is so respected by the kids.

“We have been told the damage is being caused by an animal and therefore it is difficult for us to do anything at present.

“We would like to say, though, that this will be not tolerated and would ask anyone who sees it happening to contact the police or the council.”
