Mitch Benn, Funnybone

After announcing he was prepared to give people their money back if they didn’t laugh at the top-notch line-up on offer, Funnybone Comedy Club owner Mike Callaghan obviously knew he was onto a winning formula on Friday night.

Three top acts including headliner Mitch Benn of Radio Two Ask Elvis fame wowed the crowd hungry to get their money’s worth of belly-laughs.

First up was Rada-trained actor Matt Blaize, who managed through his polished and self-assured delivery to get the security details of the man in the front row in the first five minutes.

His was a brave act that was reminiscent of a young Eddie Murphy and judging from the crowd’s reaction, they will welcome him back with open arms.

Second on stage was Joseph Wilson, who burst onto the platform with a pizzazz of energy but unfortunately didn’t manage to sustain the fast-paced rhythm he started off with.

Although the audience warmed to him immediately, he lost them half way through and unfortunately didn’t have the material to bring them back.

But Mitch Benn, with his clever songs twisting into spoofs the topics he was crooning about, went down an absolute storm.

From laying out his murderous intentions for James Blunt to his longing for an African baby, his big performance commanded the attention of the room.

With a few great lines surfacing between songs, it was his music that really shone, especially when he pulled off the Perfect Day song, managing all the voices from the hit BBC advert.

Mitch said it was always best to leave people wanting more, and he did.
