A railway line in Poole could potentially be reopened as part of a plan to cut congestion and boos sustainable travel and trade.

Officers told members that one of the proposed elements of the plan also proposes reopening the Hamworthy branch line and support access improvements.

This part of the plan would improve to reduce congestion, support trade and increase travel options.

The growth plan is a ten year plan however officers told the committee that there are elements “such as the Hamworthy Line” that could delivered within the “next one to two years”.

In 2025, it was reported that as as part of the Western Gateway project, a sub-national transport body aimed at improving links in Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucester and parts of Somerset there was plans to expand the Port of Poole and reopen the Hamworthy branch line and support access improvements.

The Western Gateway project was proposed to facilitate goods movements to and from the port of Poole by rail and provide infrastructure to restart regular freight traffic along the Hamworthy Branch Line to Poole Port and provide a cargo/freight handling facility.
