BCP Council marked Clean Air Day on June 18 by shining a spotlight on the progress it has made to improve air quality across the region.

The awareness day, led by environmental charity Global Action Plan, encourages communities to recognise the impact of air pollution and take action to reduce it for the benefit of public health.

Councillor Andy Hadley, BCP Council cabinet member with responsibility for the environment, said: "The council has made a commitment towards clean air in our communities ahead of the UK’s legal target in 2040 and is making progress towards that goal.

"Cleaning up the air we breathe benefits us all, now and in the future.

"By focusing on this work on Clean Air Day, we can challenge ourselves and others to work to improve everyone’s health, boost our local economies, and make our towns and cities cleaner places to live."

BCP Council’s recent initiatives include air quality monitoring around schools, solar panel installations at public sites, and the rollout of 564 new EV chargers in partnership with Connected Kerb.

The authority is also running a trial of EV cross-pavement charging channels to support residents without off-street parking and has secured over £64,000 in funding to plant street trees in areas with the least tree cover.

Restoration of more than 37 hectares of peatland at Canford Heath has helped capture carbon, reduce wildfire risk and enhance biodiversity, while emissions from council housing stock have fallen by 14 per cent.

Residents are encouraged to play their part by walking, cycling or using public transport for short trips, and by avoiding bonfires, barbecues and wood burning at home.

The area currently offers more than 1,200 Beryl bikes, e-bikes and scooters for hire.

Since the scheme launched, more than three million journeys have been completed—replacing an estimated one million car trips and helping to cut road congestion and improve air quality.

To support the campaign, Morebus offered 10 per cent off Dayrider tickets through its app for travel on June 18 using the code CAD2026.

Clean Air Day is led by Global Action Plan, an environment charity.
