A major arts festival will return with a fresh theme and a newly expanded programme.

Arts by the Sea is set to return to Bournemouth in 2026 from September 25 to 26 with a new theme titled ELEMENTAL, and a focus on community, accessibility, and emerging talent, extending its reach into neighbourhoods with three Community Festivals

The expanded programme will include new events in West Howe, Bourne Valley, and, for the first time, Townsend.

The return has been secured through continued investment from Arts Council England, alongside ongoing support from BCP Council.

Andrea Francis, Festival Director, said: "ELEMENTAL celebrates the energy that runs through our communities and landscapes.

"Arts by the Sea transforms public spaces into places of imagination and shared experience.

"In 2026, we’re inviting artists and audiences to explore bold ideas, fresh perspectives and the forces that connect us, from our coastline and gardens to our neighbourhoods and high streets."

The 2026 theme, ELEMENTAL, explores the energies that shape daily life, such as electricity, earth, and water.

With a renewed focus on broadening access, the main festival will run over two days instead of three, enabling increased investment in neighbourhood events.

The Bitesized Festival days will take place on September 6 in West Howe, September 7 in Bourne Valley, and September 12 in Townsend.

Councillor Andy Martin, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Customer and Communication at BCP Council, said: "Arts by the Sea continues to be a cornerstone of our cultural calendar, bringing people together in the heart of Bournemouth and across our neighbourhoods.

"The 2026 festival promises another inspiring programme and these open calls are a vital part of giving artists the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the festival and the places we call home.

"We are pleased to confirm that we put in a successful bid to Arts Council England for the 2026 extension year, and the festival will go ahead in 2026 with our contribution and a significant amount of money from Arts Council England."

Two major artist commissions are now open.

The 2026 Artist in Residence will be tasked with creating the brochure cover, a new site-specific artwork, and community workshops.

The Associate Artist scheme will offer an emerging performance-maker the chance to develop an outdoor performance and lead workshops, with applications due by noon on March 27.

Launched in 2011, Arts by the Sea has built a reputation for transforming public spaces through large-scale spectacle, music, installations, and interactive experiences.

Further programme details will be announced in the coming months.
