The UK public have raised £7.5 million for the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal in one day.

The appeal, organised by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), was supported by celebrities Hugh Dennis, Simon Pegg, Myleene Klass and Dr Sian Williams.

The appeal total includes a generous donation from the King and Queen and impressive contributions from the public and DEC corporate partners.

The funds will provide urgent relief to those affected by the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28.

DEC charities are working round the clock to provide emergency aid including shelter, food, clean water and medical care to the hundreds of thousands impacted by the disaster.

Saleh Saeed, DEC chief executive, said: "We are extremely grateful to all the people who have already donated to the DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal."

"The stories we are now hearing from the survivors who have managed to escape the ruins of flattened buildings are harrowing."

The earthquake has severely damaged infrastructure, roads and buildings, cutting thousands off from essential services.

It has worsened an already serious humanitarian crisis that has left more than a third of the country’s population in need of aid.
