THE Milford Shingle Bank really came up trumps during a training session for the England junior team whose members will be heading off to Barcelona in a few weeks time for the World Junior Shore Angling Championships.

Under the watchful eye of their manager/coach Chris Clark the youngsters caught a string of ballan wrasse, garfish, mackerel, black bream and even an undulate ray.

The real highlight however was a superb 2-15.5 ballan wrasse, which is almost 150 per cent of the Wessex specimen size, bagged by 12-year-old Callum Graham who is a member of the Christchurch Club and comes from Southbourne.

The youngster was using a tiny size eight hook along with .20mm hook lengths when he caught the specimen.

RYAN'S WINNING WAY

TWELVE-year-old Ryan Way, who is a member of Poole Dolphins SFC, wins the latest round of Wessex Division of the NFSA junior fish of the month award with a 45-0 conger.

CARTER GETS THE FISH

THE second round of the Allan's Marine Autumn Super League fixture was fished from the Haslar Sea Wall where smooth hound, bass, pout, silver eels, sole and rockling supplied the action.

The event was fished to a catch-and-release system. The night's heaviest fish was a 2-14 smooth hound bagged by Steve Carter who went on to win the event with eight fish weighing 6-8.

Others: 2 Dave Edwards 6-4, 3 Mick Goodger 6-5, 4 Kim Andrews 2-11, 5 Daniel Mogridge 2-7, 6 Gavin Martin 1-15.

RECORD SCUPPERED

A POTENTIAL British record boat-caught sole has been apprehended just off the mouth of the Beaulieu River by Rob Willis from the Waterside, but he won't be claiming the record as his dad Ray had filleted the fish before it had been officially weighed and verified.

Willis junior, who was fishing from their own small boat Arcadian, baited a size 2/0 Aberdeen hook with ragworm to tempt the oversize flattie.

The actual fillets weighed 4lb 8oz which would make the fish well over 5lb.

Slightly closer to home a 2-6 sole has been landed from Southbourne Beach by Matthew Baker during and late night session.

Baker, a 37-year-old computer technician from Southbourne, used ragworm presented on a size one Aberdeen hook to tempt the specimen to set a new personal best.

CLOUGH AT A CANTER

REG Clough, who is a member of Boscombe and Southbourne, was certainly all smiles after the Anglers Charitable Trust open shore competition held at Littleton-on-Sea. He won his section by a canter with six flounders and a sole.

Clough went on to come third overall in the 80-peg event and then just for good measure collected the pool for the heaviest flatfish with a 1-6 sole.
