IT'S not what you expect to see when you visit a World Herit age Site, but this was the scene that greeted two walkers who decided to spend the day enjoying Dorset's beautiful coastline.

Peter, 66, and Anne Ball, 59, of West Moors, were walking in Purbeck last Thursday when they came across the mess in these pictures at Chapman's Pool, west of Worth Matravers.

Anne said: "We were shocked to see the amount of litter. It was disgusting and awful."

She added that it left a bad impression for visitors: "I was rather shocked when we arrived, it did spoil our day.

"There were empty plastic bottles, plastic buckets and there were also plastic containers with labels on them saying acid'.

"I don't know whether there's any leakage."

Dorset's coast has been blighted by debris from the Napoli container ship, which ran aground last year.

Conservationist Steve Trewhella said: "A big chunk of that rubbish at Chapman's Pool is just strewn with unbelievable amounts of litter. I went round a few weeks ago and was gobsmacked, I was very disappointed that a large percentage of it is Napoli rubbish."

Napoli project manager Dave Duffield, of BMT Marine and Offshore Surveys, said clean-up teams were visiting Chapman's Pool every fortnight, when the weather allowed.

The last visit was on August 16 and the next is due as soon as the weather permits.

He said: "We go and find a lot of debris is not Napoli-produced. Any from the Napoli we clear up and we're still doing that.

"We've been doing this a long time and we know what's coming from the Napoli and 95 per cent of it isn't."

A spokesman for the Encombe Estate, which owns Chapman's Pool, said the owners were unaware of the mess, but would now be sending teams down to clean up.
