A NEW venue has been announced for the return of a ‘beloved tradition’ in Christchurch.

Christchurch Rotary is set to return with its bonfire and fireworks event in November after a hiatus.

The event, which has been a fixture in Christchurch since 1977, has found a new home at The Grange School in Somerford, with support of Twynham Learning.

Previously held at Stanpit Rec site, the fireworks night has garnered a reputation as one of Christchurch's most anticipated and well-attended gatherings.

As a major fundraiser for Christchurch Rotary, it has consistently raised thousands of pounds each year for local charities and community groups.

Unfortunately, the event faced setbacks in recent years, with cancellations in 2019 due to adverse weather conditions, in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the discovery of methane gas on the site by BCP Council, rendering it unsuitable for future events.

Peter Boardman, current president of Christchurch Rotary, has expressed his delight at the event's return.

He said: "We are thrilled to have this hugely beneficial event back on the calendar. The bonfire and fireworks event has been a cherished tradition for decades, and we can't wait to welcome back all those who have enjoyed it in the past."

Gareth Morris, CEO of Twynham Learning, remarked on the exciting opportunity for The Grange School to host such a significant community event.

He said: "We are honoured to be involved in an event that brings so much joy and benefit to the wider Christchurch community.

“The Grange School is proud to support Christchurch Rotary and their efforts to continue this beloved tradition."

The bonfire and fireworks event is scheduled to take place on November 2.

Christchurch Rotary invites individuals, community groups, and local businesses to support the event.

Opportunities for involvement include marshalling, stewarding, and offering services to support the event.

Community groups interested in participating are encouraged to get in touch.
