LUXURIOUS student accommodation is to be built in Bournemouth town centre after winning approval from the town hall.

Fortitudo will soon start work on building the new student accommodation block housing 96 in Hinton Road.

Named Rothesay House, the scheme will be the Poole-based property firm’s first dip in student housing with a target of more than 1,500 units nationwide.

Inside, the new “luxurious” accommodation will feature cutting edge technology that Fortitudo hopes will increase efficiency and security for those living in it.

A communal space on the ground floor will feature a gym and games room as well as laundry and cycle storage.

Fortitudo chief executive Richard Carr said: “Construction is due to start imminently and the project is anticipated to be completed in readiness for student university intake in 2026.

“We are very excited about our move into the purpose-built student accommodation market which we have been working on for 24 months.

“We will bring a new dimension to student living giving much more comfort safety and independence to each of our ‘LUX’ developments.”

Demolition of the former Farview House building in Hinton Road was completed last year after the developer secured planning permission for it.

Along with this, Fortitudo secured approval for reserved matters for an eight storey building comprising 49 flats.

Fortitudo said the student accommodation will be constructed to modern building regulation standards and will be a fossil fuel free development with no natural gas supplied.

BCP Council approved the scheme on the condition that Fortitudo contributes £20k to cycle lane improvements and other conditions.

The authority’s planning officer said: “It is accepted that the provision of bespoke student accommodation will help to easy the housing stock by providing access to quality managed student accommodation.

“The proposal will introduce a greater student population in the town centre location, which would in turn be a positive addition to the local economy.

“The scheme would also allow a much-needed regeneration of Hinton Road.”

Elsewhere in the town centre, student accommodation is being built in Old Christchurch Road at the former House of Fraser in time for the start of the new academic year this September.
