TENSIONS reached boiling point at Tuesday night’s full council meeting as residents and councillors all clashed with each other.

Shouting could be heard from the public gallery of the town hall at the start of a 20mph debate, by those seemingly unhappy around the council’s position on the war between Israel and Palestine.

Council chair Lesley Dedman had no choice but to adjourn the fractious meeting for around 10 minutes while security removed people from the public viewing area.

It’s understood the protesters accused the council of not following an amendment from a previous full council debate surrounding the conflict.

BCP Council’s position on the conflict is to “stand ready to provide support and open our arms to innocent people displaced and affected by these events”.

Meanwhile, later in the meeting on the same debate, Tory councillor Bobbie Dove accused Green councillor Joe Salmon of calling her a "liar", after he claimed councillors have made up “false stories”.

He said: “The nonsense we hear from people about this; the fact that some councillors feel the need to make up false stories about children being hit by buses at 30mph and survive... utter nonsense.”

Cllr Dove interrupted, demanding an apology from Cllr Salmon, replying: “I will not be called a liar in this chamber. I’ve been called a liar on three occasions on Twitter by this councillor and again in this chamber.

“I have lived experience, we have logs with the police, pocket note book entries of incidents I have been to.”

Janie Berry, BCP Council’s monitoring officer, said no rules had been breached as Cllr Salmon did not name Cllr Dove.

She said: “I’m not aware that Cllr Dove was named by Cllr J Salmon. Cllr Dove has chosen to make this statement of her own accord.

“I’m not convinced that Cllr Dove’s statement falls within the council’s procedure rules, it’s something Cllr Dove has volunteered.”

Cllr Salmon did not have to apologise.

As reported, Cllr Dove had previously said at an overview and scrutiny meeting debate on 20mph roads that she has “seen children being hit by a bus and they’ve bounced up and they’ve asked if they could have a milkshake”.
