THE world’s leading beach polo tournament is set to return to the sand this summer.

Sandpolo, also known as the British Beach Polo Championships, will take place on Sandbanks beach on July 12 and 13.

Now in its 17th year, the tournament features the world’s top polo players and their ponies, featuring fast-paced stadium polo, horse stunt riding, feasting and parties.

Each year, the event welcomes up to 8,000 spectators to the largest beach polo event in the world.

Beach polo is described as ‘ice hockey on horseback’, demanding skill, bravery and stamina from the polo ponies and the riders.

Adolfo Casabal, who is a regular player at Sandpolo, said: “My team love playing Sandpolo.

“The polo is extremely competitive; the audience is fantastic and of course we look forward to partying with everyone after the matches.

“We hope to bring home the trophy for Team Whispering Angel.”

The favourites for the tournament this year are Team Daizun Investments, led by Garrie Renucci, who are based at Cowdray Park, Sussex.

During the day, Karl Ude-Martinez will perform a stunt riding show, and there will be a charity race between the fastest polo pony and an Audi 4x4, in aid of Lewis Manning Hospice Care.

Each evening, after the day’s polo, the event transitions to a ‘high-energy party vibe’.

On the opening night, Friday, July 12, live acts include 70s/80s ‘sensation’ Odyssey, Brit Award winner Lemar, Wonderband and specialist Soul, Funk and Disco DJs in Boogie on the Beach.

Following the prize giving on Saturday, the closing party will feature DJ Sam Young and a host of other DJs.

Johnny Wheeler, Sandpolo founder, said: “The support for Sandpolo over the years has been phenomenal.

“It is always such a privilege to bring this spectacular event to Sandbanks.

“Looking back at the photos and films from last year, after a long and rainy winter, makes me incredibly proud of the team and everyone that supports our event.

“Above all, our guests who continually turn up and support us. I'm looking forward to July and some sunshine. I'll see you at the beach.”
