PLANS have been lodged for a new café to fill a vacant unit in Christchurch.

An application has been submitted to BCP Council requesting a change of use for the former ‘Goff’s Family Funeral Services’ at 132 Purewell.

Applicant Tarik Kuyumcu requests that the vacant site can be used as a coffee shop called ‘Street Coffee’.

A statement submitted by Studio Arkell on behalf of Mr Kuyumcu reads: “The funeral director is unoccupied and has remained unused for a number of years.

“The applicant would like to see that this shop is reinstated and offers employment opportunities for the locality once again.

“The installation of a coffee shop to this location would be a welcome addition, offering refreshments and light snacks to visitors of Purewell and further afield.”

According to plans, the conversion from funeral director to coffee shop would involve “light decoration throughout” and the installation of storage facilities, but with no changes to internal walls.

Permission has also been sought for new shop signage to the front and side elevations, plus the installation of a new extraction unit to service the café.

Detailing the works, Studio Arkell said: “The building will have a general uplift throughout, touching up paintwork where required, and installing a new extraction unit to the rear elevation.

“To the front and side elevations the windows will be cleaned up, with replacement obscure film installed.

“The existing blue and white signage will be removed and replaced with the applicant’s logo and shop name; ‘Street Coffee’.

“This will be more sympathetic to the building and surrounding environment as the colours will be a muted palette of creams and browns.”

The applicant has said the proposed change of use and reopening of the premises would “enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.”

It was also noted that the colour scheme of the proposed business would be “more sympathetic to the colour palette of the surrounding buildings”.

BCP Council is yet to make a decision on the planning application.
