A MAN who died after falling from the third floor of a guest house in Vietnam had his phone and wallet stolen ‘from his dead body’, an inquest heard.

Benjamin Hugh Milner was travelling around south east Asia when he was tragically found dead outside his accommodation in Vietnam.

An inquest held at Bournemouth Town Hall on January 24 heard that Benjamin, who has family connections to Dorset, rarely drank alcohol in the UK but began to drink socially whilst travelling.

Amanda Milner, Benjamin’s sister, said in a statement to Dorset Coroner’s Court that her 46-year-old brother was a ‘sensible young man’ who was very into his health and looked after himself.

He was diagnosed with ADHD and depression, and it was known that he would stop taking his medication when he drank.

Ms Milner added: “He loved life and never wanted to die and never spoke about wanting to take his own life.”

She said that his phone, wallet and other items were never found following his death.

Benjamin was staying at a guest house in Ho Chi Minh City when the manager saw him ‘talking to himself’ at 5.20am on November 5, 2022.

She told him to return to his room to rest but a few minutes later she heard a ‘loud bang’, and found Benjamin laying on the floor outside the building.

The court heard that CCTV shown to the Vietnamese authorities saw Benjamin ‘unsteady’ and bumping into the guest house door before the tragic fall.

However, the family expressed their frustration that this footage has still not been shown to Benjamin’s loved ones or to the UK authorities.

There was no evidence to suggest any third-party involvement and it is believed he was alone at the time of his death.

Vietnamese doctors believe his cause of death to be traumatic skull brain injury however, Dr Juliane Stolte, pathologist at Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth, concluded the cause to be multiple injuries.

A toxicology report revealed an extreme amount of alcohol in Benjamin’s blood, around three times the UK legal drink drive limit.

Senior coroner for Dorset, Racheal Griffin, said it is still unclear what happened in the lead up to Benjamin’s death but that it is believed he was drinking and socialising that night.

She concluded that Benjamin’s death was an accident and that he died from multiple injuries as a result of falling from height.

His family said he was a ‘clumsy’ drunk and that they are ‘devastated’ by his death.
