AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a 92-year-old woman who was hit by a car close to her home in Poole.

Eileen Edith Symes was taken to hospital with ‘very serious injuries’ and died a few days after the crash.

Assistant coroner for Dorset, Debbie Rookes, opened the inquest into her death at Bournemouth Town Hall on January 23.

Coroner’s officer, Laura Thorne, told Dorset Coroner’s Court that Eileen was a retired electronics engineer and was a widow to Roy Reginald Walter Syms, who was also an electronics engineer.

Eileen lived in a flat at Maple Lodge on Douglas Close in Poole at the time of her death.

Police and paramedics were called to Blandford Road North, near Douglas Close after reports of a crash involving a blue Ford Focus and a pedestrian on January 6.

The driver of the Ford Focus was a Poole woman in her 40s.

The pedestrian, later confirmed to be Eileen, was taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance with very serious injuries.

However, despite efforts by medical staff, Eileen passed away at 9.40pm on January 8 in hospital.

She was formally identified by PC James Lennard at Holly Tree Lodge Mortuary by a photo provided by Eileen’s family.

Dr Albadry conducted a post-mortem examination and found her provisional cause of death to be multiple injuries.

Ms Rookes adjourned the inquest into Eileen’s death for a pre-inquest review on August 5 at 11am.

Dorset Police have confirmed that there have been no arrests and that investigations are ongoing.

Eileen’s family paid tribute after her death saying she lived a ‘full’ life through travelling and enjoyed the company of her niece in her later years.

They added that in her retirement years, Eileen had a love for fashion and enjoyed going out for coffee and cake while shopping.

“Eileen will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her niece.”
