A COASTAL path in Purbeck has been forced to close after a landslip happened overnight.

Dorset Council has closed the path at Houns Tout, in between Worth Matravers and Kimmeridge.

According to the authority, the steps at the lowest part of the pathway have been blocked and rendered “completely unusable”.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: “The coast path has been affected once more by a landslip at Houns Tout, near Worth Matravers and Kingston.

“This recent slip has removed the lowest section of steps and the path is completely unusable.

“The path has been closed for safety reasons. There is a diversion in place.”

A spokesperson for Dorset Council added: "Meetings are taking place with England Coast Path, South West Coast Path, landowners and tenants to provide a good alternative route."

Houns Tout forms part of the 115-mile-long Jurassic Coast section of the South West Coast Path.

Dubbed the UK’s “ultimate challenge for the long-distance hiker", the 630-mile route takes walkers around the coastline of England’s south western peninsula.
