Poole Park cricket pavilion was set on fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning suffering minor damage.

Said to have occurred at 2.39am, the fire was caused by burning rubbish in the doorway of the pavilion.

However, it was quickly attended to by crews from Poole Fire Station who put out the fire using a hose reel jet.

Believed to be suspicious, the incident was reported to police, who were informed that the fire had been put out at 4.49am. Officers did not attend.

The pavilion suffered minor damage to one its entrances, however, there is believed to be minimal internal or structural damage to the building.

The pavilion, on Sandbanks Road, is a Grade II status building.

First constructed in 1888, it was most recently refurbished in 2014 and fitted with a new kitchen, showers, enlarged function room, and a disability access ramp, costing £160,000.

Used by Poole Town Cricket Club during its active season, the team use the facilities to host matches and provide changing rooms. Through the winter it is used by Poole Wheelers Cycling Club.
