BOURNEMOUTH’S second tallest tower has been given the green light to go ahead by the council.
The Laureate, a three-tower residential landmark block housing 247 apartments in Holdenhurst Road, Lansdowne, is to be built next year.
The build to rent development will be constructed from one core but with the outward appearance of three towers standing at 11, 16, and 22 storeys.
It will replace the abandoned Telecom House building and, once complete, will be taller than neighbouring student accommodation, The Helm, which stands at 180ft.
This means it will be the second tallest planned building in Bournemouth, behind Oxford Gardens also in Lansdowne which will stand at 29-storeys high when built next year.
A case officer report by BCP Council said: “It is considered that the proposed building would be a significant development in the Bournemouth tall buildings area.

“However, despite the scale it will integrate well onto the site as well as integrating well in the wider context, with regards to both lower and taller buildings, in a location which is evolving as a tall buildings zone.”
The report added: “The building will be striking and prominent and will therefore compete in some views with nearby heritage assets but the harm is limited as there is no direct harm to these heritage assets.
“Any harm will mainly be a result of wider views of the setting.
“Therefore, the balance of the lower level of harm against the benefits of the efficient use of this site resulting in a landmark building in an evolving tall buildings zone adjacent to other tall buildings and other forthcoming proposals means that the benefits, on balance, outweigh the harm.”
The new building will come with ground floor commercial space, a café, shared lounge areas, working space, landscaped terraces and a dedicated concierge service for residents.
A sky garden style roof terrace will be built on the top floor and is described by developers Packaged Living as “the jewel in The Laureate's amenity range”.
To accommodate the mix of 17 studio apartments, 108 one-bed, 111 two-bed and 11 three-bedroom apartments, 423 cycle parking spaces will be made.
Packaged Living also must provide £186,330 towards public realm and road safety improvements as well as £56,160 towards the provision of two car club spaces.
The applicants have been approached for more details.
