A rape victim tried to climb over a clifftop fence to escape her attacker after he targeted her in a nightclub, a court has heard.

The woman had spent two hours trying to rebuff Ahmed Almryam's advances in a bar before he followed her when she left, it is alleged.

The court was told that the 31-year-old was seen on CCTV attempting to kiss and grab the woman who ran off in the direction of East Cliff in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Shortly after 6am on July 7, a Good Samaritan saw the alleged victim and Almryam beyond the fence at the top of the 100ft cliff.

The woman helped get the complainant back over the right side of the fence after Almryam told her she was trying to kill herself.

The alleged victim, who can't be named, later told police she had climbed the fence to get away from her attacker, the jury heard.

Shortly afterwards Almryam is alleged to have raped the woman close to the Red Arrows memorial on the clifftop.

Bournemouth Crown Court heard the complainant was 'heavily intoxicated' and 'highly vulnerable' on the night of the attack.

Rob Welling, prosecuting, said Almryam, who was staying at the Britannia Hotel in Bournemouth at the time, deliberately targeted the woman because of the state she was in.

He said: "He had spotted her earlier in the night at Camel nightclub. He could see she was drunk, apparently single and hoping to pick her up.

"He was determined that she wouldn't get away from him. He targeted and stuck to her for a period of about two hours in that club and eventually walked with her outside."

Mr Welling said the CCTV from the club showed the defendant targeting the woman, watching her and then 'moving in'. He described Almryam trying 'his very best' to be intimate but she rebuffed him.

It showed her pushing him away and walking away from him multiple times, the court heard.

Mr Welling added: "He denies rape, he says sexual intercourse did take place with consent.

"[The complainant] has a very patchy memory.

"We say CCTV footage before the rape happened shows she was in no fit state to look after herself, unable to stand and incapable of giving consent.

"Anybody with her could see she was highly vulnerable and needed help, not being taken advantage of."

Mr Welling said that once they left the club the woman tried to push Almryam away. He said at one point he tried to kiss her despite her turning her head away.

The prosecutor said that another video clip showed her 'breaking into a run' to get away from him before falling to the ground.

Mr Welling said: "Her first memory is of fighting him on the cliff and him biting her on the lips and face. She recalls trying to get over the cliff fence to get away from him.

"At about 6.10am an independent civilian witness came across [the complainant] and the defendant near the memorial.

"They were both over the fence, [the complainant] pulling away from the defendant.

"He told her (the witness) she wanted to kill herself and asked her to help pull her back over to safety. She held her hand and tried to comfort her.

"The woman helped her back over, [the complainant] declined an offer by her to walk her home. We say this short incident was before the rape in the area."

The jury heard that another passer-by heard the woman screaming just before 7am and found her near the Red Arrows memorial.

When arrested Almryam told police the woman had been very drunk and he was trying to help her. He said when they got to the cliff she had tried to jump off and he had to pull her back with the help of another woman.

He told them when it all calmed down, she asked him to have sex with her.

He claimed he had no thoughts of sex earlier in the night and did not find her attractive.

Mr Welling added: "Contrary to his insistence there was no sexual motive, we say he had spotted a vulnerable target and took her away to have his way with her.

"She didn't consent, he knew it, but he didn't care."

Almryam denies one charge of rape.

The trial continues.
