CHRISTCHURCH Town Council has assured residents that Christmas is not cancelled.

The Christmas lights switch-on and display are still going ahead, the authority has confirmed.

It comes after BCP Council announced it would not be funding any Christmas lights or trees in Christchurch from 2023 onwards.

Christchurch Town Council has managed the lights display in the town since 2019 but said it ‘came as a surprise’ that BCP Council would not be funding the Christmas tree.

The town council now wants to ensure that Christchurch has a fantastic display this festive season and has hinted at a snowflake theme.

It has also confirmed it will organise and fund the Christmas tree.

There will be a Christmas lights switch-on event in Christchurch High Street and Saxon Square on Saturday, November 25.

A full day of entertainment has been lined up between 11am and 7pm with performances from singers and groups including Soul To Soul Choir, The Choir Engine Christchurch and Charlie Greenwood.

All ages are catered for with Minky Moo's bringing songs and games to the stage and Hush Club playing music and serving seasonal cocktails.

The lights will be turned on by Christchurch Mayor Viv Charrett at 5.30pm where she will be joined by Santa and members of the Highcliffe Charity Players.

Headlining party band 6 to the Bar will play straight after the lights turn on.

Cllr Viv Charrett said: “I think this year will be a fantastic year. Christmas will truly be celebrated throughout the Christchurch area.

"The snowflake theme lights are fantastic. It will be truly amazing; I hope to see everyone there."
