A NEW Forest pub has been crowned one of the best in the country at the Great British Pub Awards.

The Stag in Lyndhurst has beaten thousands of other watering holes to take the top spot in the National Pub of the Year – Greene King.

Also a hotel and restaurant, it is described as “a traditional pub retreat nestled in the New Forest National Park”.

Proud owners Maria and Steve Harris said: “We are very proud to accept this award on behalf of the team and the punters.

Bournemouth Echo:

“When we purchased The Stag in lockdown, we wanted to make [it] feel like a community hub, where people can come and enjoy a quiet pint or enjoy one of our live music weekly functions.

“One of recent reviews on Trip Advisor summarises this very well ‘Great staff, great food, great selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages… I think what stands out for this place is how much they do for the local community and visitors and tourists alike… always putting on great entertainment for all the family and the facilities are fantastic’.

“’Lots of TVs both in and outside yet plenty of space to just relax without being near one. Very, very lucky to have this on our doorstep’.”

Ed Bedington, chair of judges for the Great British Pub Awards, said: “The awards are designed to identify and celebrate some of the best pubs in the country, and we’re delighted that we’re able to give The Stag at Lyndhurst the recognition it deserves as a fantastic operation and one that is sure to have the customers flocking from far and wide.

“Pubs are a vital part of the fabric of our society, playing a huge role in communities and offering a wide range of services to support and bring people together.

“The Stag at Lyndhurst should be very proud to be named one of the best in the country as should the community and customers that help make it what it is.”

The competition sees thousands of pubs from across the UK fight it out across 15 categories, ranging from Best Pub for Food and Best Pub for Families to Best Pub for Sport and Best Pub Garden.
